Express Love With Your Body and Soul

Through Exceptional Service, a couple gives two gifts to each other: the gift of the body and the gift of the soul.

The gift of the body is the freely offered gift of one’s physical labor for the good of one’s mate and one’s home. You might note that there is a sexual undertone to this phrase. This is intentional. Though the sexual aspects of the gift of the body (and for that matter the gift of the soul) will be explored in depth in chapter 11, it is fitting that the sexual undercurrents be present in the context of domestic service as well. Why? Because how good a person is at physically working for the good of one’s mate and one’s home is manifested in the couple’s sexual relationship. It is a marital cliche to say that sex begins in the kitchen, but it is true nevertheless. The source of the sexual passion in Exceptional Marriages is the passionate Exceptional Service those couples render to each other in every arena. It is for this reason that some philosophers refer to domestic service as “social intercourse,” the intimacy created through daily service and communication. When an Exceptional Couple makes love, they celebrate how well they respond to one another’s needs in and outside the bedroom.

The gift of the soul refers to those acts of service that support your mate’s mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. For example, in an argument, is your first goal mutual understanding or is it proving how right you are? Are you a good listener? Do you follow through on promises? Are you good at expressing your mate’s specialness? Are you complimentary of your mate on a consistent basis? Are you grateful for your mate? Do you tell him or her? All of these are examples of the gift of the soul: the way you communicate your love, one spirit to another.
